Fason is probably a better RB then some taken after him, but he has more competition. at the time of the draft I didn't like White at all here, but after reading so many negative things about Price, this may turn out to be a wise move. Parrish I don't like at all except for a return man. Wallace seemed to be taken a round or 2 early, but both Washington and Webster slid much further than I thought they would. overall no one really stands out to me, but when you draft late, you are drafting for the future. I figured my team needed youth at running back, to soon replace the aging Tiki Barber and others. I also have a need of wide receivers on offense. I'm hoping one of these guys starts this year to get some experience and develop into a player I can start in a couple of years. Rd.1: Ciatric Fason, RB, MIN - With the RBBC and disappearing backs in Minny, he has a chance to get some on-field action this year. Sorry Rob, for grabbing him just before you. Rd. 2: Roddy White, WR, ATL - Roddy has a chance to show what he can do in Atlanta and possibly start. I'd really love to see him be a bye week starter for me. Rd. 3: Roscoe Parrish, WR, BUF - Roscoe could make his way into the lineup, he is my backup to my 2nd rd. pick. Rd. 4: Started to think about Defense here...Pittsburgh has an eye for bringing up young LBs and letting some go at the right time. Kendrell Bell is gone (KC) and this kid will most likely get some time on special teams this year. Rd. 5: Fabian Washington, DB, OAK - The 23rd pick overall! This guy has a chance to play this year, since one of the Buchanans is gone...I get them confused. Rd. 6: Corey Webster, DB, NYG - The 43rd pick overall, but the first pick by the Giants this year. If I didn't have a 1st rd. pick and had to wait until the 2nd rd., I'd be sure to get the best possible talent for my team, thus I'm hoping the Giants' scouts did their job. I traded away rd. 7's pick to Cleaning Up Harv's Mess for Tommy Maddox, giving me a handcuff to Roethlisberger. I think I did pretty well, addressing my team's needs and the trade helped a rebuilding team and gave me a little insurance for the season. (Thanks.)

loved these picks: Jones - could be the top DB in the draft with his return skills Walter - a Kerry clone ? Collins - great potential after only 1 year at TE (former WR) hated these : Merriman - might be good, but only a 3rd rounder in my book Patterson - might be good, but he is only a DT and has a lot of competition Green - who ? Burns - who ? extreme hitters-----2005 rookie draft well going into the draft i was looking for depth and really didn't help 2 positions. round #1 -shawne merriman(lb)sd--well i think shawne will be the next ray lewis.and when he's ready possibly ray will be winding down a great career. round #2-adam "PACMAN" jones (db) ten - a starter who will return kicks couldn't pass him up even though i needed help elsewhere. round # 3-mike patterson ( dt) complete homer pick but i see him playing on the line as well as all linebacker spots so he should see considerably playing time as a rookie. #4- andrew walter (qb) oak- a good pick here in my opinion, now here's to you kerry time to hit the bottle hoping for walter to become starter by2007. #5-jerome collins(te)stl-- trying to fill my needs hoping he develops soon. #6-justin green(rb)bal-adding another bal rb to my stable. #7-vincent burns(de) the colts need him to step up and start i need him for depth.

1.12 TE Heath Miller PIT 2.12 Traded for DE Michael Strahan NYG 3.12 DB Brodney Pool CLE 4.12 DB Josh Bullocks NO 5.12 LB Lofa Tatupu SEA 6.12 LB Kirk Morrison OAK 7.12 DB Sean Considine PHI
I know nothing about rookies at all. I have never had decent access to college games but I hope that will change this season. So I have no gut instincts in rookie drafts. I try to fill my needs and draft players that look to have the opportunity to play in the near future. All I have to go on are rankings, rumors, depth charts, and the opinions of others. I am assuming that the people responsible for taking players in the NFL Draft know a lot more about them than I do, or ever will.
1.12 TE Heath Miller PIT
TEs score very well in this system so I targeted the top TE before our draft started. He went to a team with a need at the position and the loss of Burress might mean extra opportunities in the red zone. I don't care about the injury history, this is a dynasty league. Roethlisberger should have a much better grasp of the system and I think he will have licence to go downfield more in 2005. I considered trading this pick to Dan as I wanted Thomas Davis and Ryan Moats. Snake did exactly that.
2.12 Traded for DE Michael Strahan NYG
Strahan is very old, coming off an injury, but he was very good before that. DEs that get a lot of sacks are rewarded well in our scoring and I gambled that Strahan may have one or two good years left, giving me a chance to win in the near future.
3.12 DB Brodney Pool CLE
I read somewhere that Pool was the clear choice behind Thomas Davis among safeties this year. Safeties are the most valuable asset in our IDP scoring and CLE has no definite starter at the position. It may take a little while, but Crennell presumably knows a good safety when he sees one, having been around Rodney Harrison. I thought he offered better value than any offensive player that was left.
4.12 DB Josh Bullocks NO
Another safety that seems well regarded and he has aging or limited ability players ahead of him. The Saints need help in the secondary and he seemed like value considering how our DBs score.
5.12 LB Lofa Tatupu SEA
Undersized, but Seattle made sure they got him. There is an opportunity for a rookie LB to get a lot of playing time in Seattle, and quite quickly. This was one of my biggest needs but the LBs don't do well in our system so I ignored more high profile prospects earlier in the draft.
6.12 LB Kirk Morrison OAK
Another chance to get a decent LB to add some depth. He seems highly ranked and looked a better prospect than other players available.
7.12 DB Sean Considine PHI
Eagles' defensive players tend to do well in fantasy scoring and Dawkins won't be around forever. It seemed worth the risk considering the potential reward of a future starting Eagles safety.
I have no clue if I had a bad draft or not. You tell me. I feel like I addressed some needs and gave myself the chance to produce some starters that will have decent trade value in our league.

In looking back at the draft I think I win most active owner as I had at least 3 different trades that involved a trade in draft position. I don't know how I did but it was fun having a lot going. I'm going to do this in edited sections as I have time.
1.4 J J Arrington RB - ARI Frank Gore RB - SF (got in a trade) 2.14 Demarcus Ware DE - DAL 3.03 Mike Nugent PK - NYJ 4.10 Craphonso Thorpe WR - KCC 5.10 Marlin Jackson DB - IND 6.10 Brandon Jones WR - TEN 7.10 Derek Anderson QB - BAL
1.4 JJ Arrington RB - ARI To get this pick I traded my 1.10 pick, 2.10 pick and Drew Bennett who I was losing to free agency for Coaches 1.6 pick, his 2.6 pick and $50 breakneck bucks. Then I traded Keyshaun Johnson and the 1.6 to Bill for the 1.4 pick and we flipped my 2nd round pick for his 3rd round pick next year. This gave me the 1.4 pick and i was targetting Arrington at that spot. He's 5'9" 214 lbs and ran the fastest RB time at the combine. He led the nation in rushing and didn't have a game under 100 yards last year while playing in a major conference. He's going to a team with no starting RB to speak of and Denny Green loves to use guys hes drafted. In retrospect I'm not sure if i gave up too much in the trades. I was going to lose Bennett and had no idea what his value would be in this new system we've set up. All in all I was happy to get JJ.
2.14 Demarcus Ware and Frank Gore (in a trade) I started this round with the 2.4 and 2.6 picks. I knew i would get 2 quality players at this spot one of which I hoped was Gore. Well Craig took Gore at the end of the first round and I traded the 2.4 and 2.6 for Gore and his 2.14 pick. I liked Gore in San Fran as Barlow hasn't done much for me and if Gore can get healthy (a big if) I see him as the San Fran starting RB eventually. I liked Ware for his speed and mean streak and envision Parcells using him much like an LT. I also like the fact that Ware is listed as a DE but will most likely play LB and will score points at the inflated DL scoring rate. At the Ware pick I was looking hard at Matt Jones but decided Jones was too much of a project for me at this pick.
3.3 Mike Nugent PK NYJ Well another trade with Smitty this time as I wanted to move up to get Nugent. If this wasn't the BDFL I wouldn't have done this. I traded Julian Peterson (who is a bear when healthy) and Phil Dawson for the 3.3 pick and L J Smith. I needed another TE since Evil Crash Winslow is out another season. As an aside I traded Peterson because he is getting a little older, is coming off a major injury and I thought my LB corp is pretty strong and I could stand trading him. This trade and pick could come back and bite me.
4.10 Craphonso Thorpe WR KCC I was hoping Vincent Jackson, Antrelle Rolle, Jerome Mathis or Carlos Rogers would make it to me from my 3rd round pick but no such luck as Pex took the last of those players (Rogers) right before my pick. I had Thorpe as a major sleeper coming into thid draft. I watch SEC football a lot and he has impressed me with his athleticism. He has decent size at 6'1" 190 lbs and is very quick. I also liked that KC drafted him, they have Eddie (hands of stone ) Kennison and a buch of question marks. As much as Green throws the ball somebody will have to step up and heres hoping its Thorpe. Plus its always good to take a good Craphonso now and then.
5.10 Marlin Jackson DB IND I had hoped Adrian Mcpherson would fall to me here but no such luck. I went with Jackson because Indys DB's are pitiful and I think he'll start this year plus everything I've read on him indicates hes tough and could make a lot of tackles which score well from that position.
6.10 Brandon Jones WR TEN This pick was between Jones and Dan Cody who Rob took one pick later. Jones has good size at 6'2" 210 lbs and decent speed. I had just read where Jones looked the best of the new TEN WRs and that may have influenced me. After Rob took Cody I did have some doubts. I guess we'll see what happens.
7.10 Dereck Anderson QB BAL This guy is 6'6" 240 lbs, has a rocket arm and will play behind Kyle Boller. Perfect as he should be the starter by game 6. Probably not but he is big with a strong arm and Boller has not done much to impress me. One never knows.
Overall I was pleased with the first 6 players I got and I guess we'll see on the other 2.
Well let me have it guys as I did have one of the more interesting drafts.

Some brief comments on my draft.
1.02 Williams, Carnell TBB RB
With the lack of talent at RB on my team, I wanted to ensure that I came out of the draft with one of the top 3 RBs, and this is the guy I wanted from the beginning. I know there have been some changes with the OL in TB, but I figure if Dunn could run behind what they had last year, then Williams should be able to produce this year.
2.02 Clarett, Maurice DEN RB
This was a tough choice for me. I wanted another RB and was expecting one or more of the guys who went late in RD 1 to still be there. I felt Clarrett was the highest risk/reward RB available, despite all the problems. If he gets his head out of his ass, he could be a good RB in the NFL.
3.02 Ruud, Barrett TBB LB
Ruud will be taking over MLB duties in TB. Quarles is under contract through 2007, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Ruud take over sooner.
4.02 Jackson, Vincent SDC WR
Jackson is big and fairly quick. I like that combination. He could be a nice target for either Brees or Rivers.
5.02 Houston, Cedric NYJ RB
Who knows? Maybe Houston can become the heir to C-Mart. It was worth the risk here. 6.02 Gibson, Fred PIT WR
I like Gibson's chances to play in PIT. I don't think anyone knows what's going to happen across from Ward. Gibson could be very well be WR4 or even better by the end of this season.
7.02 Fox, Dustin MIN CB
I'm a Buckeye fan, and apparently so are the Vikings.

I feel for you Muses. I watch no college football at all and rely totally on the "experts" for my draft information. maybe that is why I liked your draft so much. we probably research some of the same sources. lol your only weakness WAS TE. Miller falling to you was pure genius. I let Strahan go to look towards the future. you are on top now, so why not stay there. I really wanted Pool and thought about him at #35 and # 43, but decided to fill weaknesses at DL and LB first. my bad. all of the others look to have a chance at starting this year except Considine, but he could have more keeper value than everyone except Miller. overall a pretty good draft picking out of the #12 spot. 1.12 TE Heath Miller PIT 2.12 Traded for DE Michael Strahan NYG 3.12 DB Brodney Pool CLE 4.12 DB Josh Bullocks NO 5.12 LB Lofa Tatupu SEA 6.12 LB Kirk Morrison OAK 7.12 DB Sean Considine PHI I know nothing about rookies at all. Everyone that has replied seems to be pleased with their own draft. We all seem to have filled "holes" that we weren't happy with on our rosters.
======================================= Kellums.........yes, I jumped the gun on Kyle Orton (3rd). I see now that I could have had him in the later part of the 4th, possibly the 5th. But I had a plan/scheme and I stuck to it.
PICKS #1 & #2.....................1st off, I wanted some decent, respectable RB depth and swore I was going to devote my 1st 2 picks to the young RB stable. I really wanted CFason, but I did have EShelton in my radar the whole time. I'm actually liking that pick more and more I think about it, especially long term. Stephen Davis is not getting younger and Deshaun Foster can't quite stay healthy enough. Good future RB, I believe. Getting him at #11 still has me puzzled. I guess seeing Reggie Brown, WR, picked before Fason & Shelton really shocked me. I'm not sure what direction I would have gone had Shelton and Fason been taken when I came up. Well I know what position I would have drafted, but not sure WHO. I really like the spot that I got Brandon Jacobs in. He could be a goalline threat for the NYGiants, kinda like the Thunder/Lightning days with Ron Dayne/Tiki Barber. Plus I love this kid's size.......maybe too d**n big for a typical RB, but that should only make him harder to bring down. I really like his future too. And he has some wheels. Not Michael Bennett speed but good enough in the open field.
PICKS #3 & #5.....................I also felt I needed to address my QB situation now that I don't have Kerry Collins any longer. That's where I jumped the gun a bit. So by me taking Orton in the 3rd and Orlovsky in the 5th, I have some potential behind McScabb. I really wanted Aaron Rodgers with my 3rd round pick but he didn't make it to me. That isn't surprising though. So I panicked a little.........who can blame me? In a 14 team draft, too many players fall off the board between picks. In hindsight, I should have gone a different direction (can you say Brodney Pool? Taken right after Orton). But I think long term, Orton may get a shot at QB within the next year or 2. The Bears still have alot of work to do though. Adding Cedric Benson helps, that's for sure. Now Orton needs the PT. The Orlovsky pick was for more depth at QB.......I had to flip a coin between Lefors and Orlovsky because I wanted them both. I like the wideouts in Detroit better than Carolina right now and don't see Jeff Garcia standing in Dan's way for very long, if at all. If Joey Harrington falters, I could have a starter this season.
PICK#4........................I was VERY surprised to see Kevin Burnett still sitting on the board when my 4th round pick came around. He is a perfect model of a Bill Parcells type LB. And with Dallas going from a 4-3 DEF to a 3-4 scheme, Burnett could flourish under Parcells. And I've also seen some reports that the Cowpukes are shopping Dat Nguyen around the league. This could open a spot for Burnett in his 1st season. But again, long term.........this was a steal in the 4th. I'll just stash Kevin Burnett in my LB stable and keep him from all of you guys. All I need from him is to recover from the minor surgery he had and get ready for training camps.
PICK #6......................To say I was thrilled to see Dan Cody, DE, BALT available in the 6th round would be an understatement. I did need some help in that area (I felt) and considering the aggressiveness of the BALT DEF, he could do well. I have read that he might be switching to LB or he needs to bulk up to stay at DE. Either way, I feel good about that pick and do think I can get some value from it.
PICK #7.....................this was the guy I wanted from the 4th round on until I finally got him. Donte Nicholson, S, TBB. Not alot of people know his name, but they will learn it quick. I'm lucky that he was still there.........and not sure how he fell this far. He could be a major player for the Bucs.

according to Rob:
PICK #7.....................this was the guy I wanted from the 4th round on until I finally got him. Donte Nicholson, S, TBB. Not alot of people know his name, but they will learn it quick. I'm lucky that he was still there.........and not sure how he fell this far. He could be a major player for the Bucs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To assume no one knows him is under-rating your opponents, not a good thing to do.....hehe
Yeah, I heard of him, you could very be right that he will be a major player for the Bucs...However take a look at how TB safties do FF wise. Barber did well last year at CB due to our scoring system, but TB safties? I believe the top TB safety was Phillips coming in at......533rd overall in our scoring.......Now why did he fall so far?
I'm not picking on you, there are plenty of others that could be be picked on....I just love it when someone says "no one knows him"....I may be (and usually am) WRONG about a player but I usually "know" him...... For what it's worth I like the rest of your draft! Down the road you'll be glad Coach "stole" Fiason and you got Shelton!

Cut me some slack Snake............it was 4am when I was typing this mess. But just to clarify what I was REALLY trying to say was that I think Nicholson could be the player that John Lynch was for the Bucs. Now whether that equates into good fantasy points for my team, I don't know. But I sure like dem hard hitters. And I think he will be. And I needed the help in the CB/S department so I'm hoping he fills that need. Sorry to insult anyone if I didn't think anyone knew Donte.............I should say I'm just surprised that nobody drafted him. The guy has talent, but we ALL knew that. ;D And considering you picked on my #7 write up..........I guess I did OK with it if you only picked ONE of them. At least you didn't pick on the other 6.

hehe......all the slack in the world buddy. Please don't take this the wrong way.......I was mainly just bored. It is so d**n hard to come across tongue-in-cheek on here. I don't put a lot of stock into trying to guess the rookie market after the first couple of rounds....the only thing I picked up on was my favorite line in FF.... "nobody knows him".. ;D

I am not surprised about people being pleased with their drafts. It makes sense that you will value the players you picked above the others available at the time. I have a couple of regrets about some of the players I missed, but I knew it would happen. I had to address my biggest need with the 1.12, considering how TEs score in this league. I also knew that I wouldn't pick again until 3.12 and that the "name" rookies would all be gone. That is why I focused on defense.
The thing with rookies is, all you have to go on is how they performed at a lower level. Players from big colleges get more recognition. Some get stuck behind a prolific starter. We get to see the combine results, and that can provide a clue. Athletic ability seems as important as anything except opportunity. But there will always be surprises. Tom Brady was drafted very late for example.
It would be interesting after five years to look back on the 490 players drafted in our rookie drafts just to see how many are regular starters for their fantasy team. I bet we missed drafting a lot of those that will produce and the waiver wire will be an important part of building a team.

What a fun read this is 3 years later. It's great to re read our comments and thoughts while drafting players from the perspective of time. It's also a lot of fun to see the can't miss players that didn't make it and the sleepers that did.
We have got to do this for this years 2008 rookie draft as I had a blast reading this again !!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice read and a good reminder that despite all of our homework on the picks, and strategizing, etc it's all a crapshoot.
Rob - we need to do this for the MFL-east
